Michael Varisco

On behalf of the Joan Mitchell Foundation, the Arts Council of New Orleans commissioned Michael Varisco’s “Fragile Land Rotunda.” It is a series of post Katrina photos hanging from the arches that surround the Popp’s Fountain in City Park. It will be through 2010. Back in 1934, the Work’s Progress Administration built this structure.

Dawn DeDeaux

Dawn DeDeaux’s “Steps Home” is a work made up of three steps, a frequent sight for some who returned to New Orleans after Katrina. Attempts to place this illuminated sculpture in the Frecnh Quarter were denied. This piece has also provoked letters to the editor o the Times-Picayune.

Paul Willinski

Paul Willinski’s “Emergency Response Unit” is a modified FEMA-like trailer. Here are some shots as I circled the unit. Supposedly the extended side can slide back into the main part. It serves as a solar and wind powered mobile artist’s studio. The artist intended this as a hopeful installation for displaced or visiting artists following Katrina. This piece was originally placed in the Lower Ninth Ward and later it was moved to an area near the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA).

Katharina Grosse

Katharina Grosse’s “Untitled” is a site-specific Color Field acrylic painting on the front of a house, a fence and front yard. This installation has drawn some outrage in letters to the editor of The Times-Picayune. It looks like part of the material painted on was blown off the house.

Wangechi Mutu

Wangechi Mutu’s “Mrs. Sarah’s House” is a tribute to the residents of the Lower Ninth Ward who returned to their homes after Katrina. The wooden frame of a typical New Orleans home was built on the footprint of a house. Strings of lights follow the lines created of the wooden frame.

Adam Cvijanovic

Adam Cvijanovic’s mural, "The Bayou," graces the walls of four rooms upstairs at Tekrema Center for Art and Culture which is located on Burgundy street in the Lower Ninth Ward. The images are rich and detail. I really liked the feel of having all the walls filled with the bayou imagery. The murals had a peaceful effect on me.
