Dog Day Afternoon in Audubon Park

“Dog Day Afternoon in Audubon Park” is an event put on by the Louisiana SPCA. This year’s event was held on Sunday, April 6, 2008. It was a beautiful day to be in the park. Here are some photos of the booths along the path near the start of the Walkathon.

Even though Willi and Otto go walking had walked in Audubon Park before, they didn’t make it too far in the Walkathon. Here they are resting up afterwards. They were ready to go home.

After some waiting, participants were asked to proceed to the starting area, with their dogs, for the Walkathon. Here are photos at the start and the path to the start.

The band, Fleur de Lis, performed on stage as dog owners and their dogs waited for the Walkathon to begin.

Food & Drink

Participants had an assortment of food and drink items to choose from at “Dog Day Afternoon.” They could eat and listen to music performed by Fleur de Lis.

On April 6th I went with the owners of Willi and Otto to “Dog Day Afternoon” at Audubon Park in Uptown New Orleans. Below the two dogs wait for registration in the Walkathon. There are some distance shots of the event in Audubon Park.

Mystic Krewe of Barkus forms at Louis Armstrong Park

New Orleans dogs have their own carnival organization, Mystic Krewe of Barkus. This year's theme was "Indiana Bones in 'Raiders of the Lost Bark'". Many of the dogs were dressed with jackets and hats just like Indiana. Some of them even had a boulder to pull around - on wheels that is. Then others wore what they wanted ignoring the theme. Of course their owners dressed up too.

This marked the first time I’ve seen this parade. I went with two friends and their two long haired dachshunds. We had fun watching the parade form in Louis Armstrong Park. If you scroll to the last of the Barkus photos, you will see how croweded the French Quarter was for this parade.
